Hikers Lost

On November 7, 2018 two hikes set out in the afternoon to hike the Indian Head Mtn Loop. As they descended down the east side of the mountain it became dark. Neither of them had head lamps, so they needed help getting out of the woods. Click image for more details (Nov 15)

Signifcant Injuries

The 57-year-old man fell and sustained injuries and broken bones to his leg, hip, and back in a mountain bike accident at Windham Mountain. Click image for more details (Oct 8)

Broken Leg

The 57-year-old woman fell and broke her leg in the Kaaterskill Falls region. EMS, SAR, and police were called to region around Bastion Falls. It took several hours to extract her and transport her to the hospital. Click image for more details (Oct 6)

Another Injury

The woman has fallen on the upper waterfall of Kaaterskill Falls. This resulted in a lacerated leg injury. It was reported that she fell down to the bottom of the upper falls into the middle basin. EMS requested technical team to extract her from the location Click image for more details (Sept 29)

Parking Enlarged

The former Windham High Peak parking lot has been enlarged from 20 cars to 40 cars. The project has been on-going for over a month. It has now been completed. Click image for more details (Sept 29)

Police Chase

The DEC closed down the area surrounding the Vernooy Kill Falls due to a police chase involving a 42-year-old man with a gun. Joshua Stuart fired a gun in the Ellenville Hospital Emergency Room and at the DEP police. Click image for more details (Sept 28)

Vandalism

On September 24, 2018 a hiker's car was vandalised early in the evening at the Vernooy Kill Falls Parking Area. The hikers were camping a short distance away. Click image for more details (Sept 24)

Hiker Injured

On September 15, 2018 a Hiker broke his ankle on Plateau Mountain. Near mid-night his friends called 911 for help. Two Rangers were able to find the hiker about 1/2 mile from the trailhead. By 9am the next day they had splitted his leg to get him out of the woods Click image for more details (Sept 15)

Hikers Lost

On September 8, 2018 two hikers from Dutchess County where hiking near North-South Lake. After the sun set, they couldn't find their way back to the campground. So they called DEC Dispatch for help. Rangers found them the next morning, and escorted them back to the campground. Click image for more details (Sept 8)

Sugarloaf SAR

On August 24, 2018 a 37-year-old hiker from Binghamton NY was injured while hiking on Devil's Path on the steep Sugarloaf Mtn. DEC Rangers called in a helicopter to extract him. Click image for more details (Aug 25)

Hiker Dies

On August 24, 2018 a 65-year-old hiker from Rhinebeck died to Huckleberry Point near Kaaterskill High Peak. DEC Rangers & Paramedics performed CPR, but could not rescuitate him Click image for more details (Aug 24)

Exhausted Hiker

On August 21, 2018 a 20-year-old hiker became exhausted and coundn't continue hiking while hiking up Slide Mountain. DEC Rangers found him asleep on the trail, and helped him down the mountain Click image for more details (Aug 21)

Waterfall Injury

On August 21, 2018 a 16-year-old hiker fell off of Ashley Falls and was knocked unconscious he was climbing. The DEC and SAR took over 5 hours to extract the teenager from the wilderness. Click image for more details (Aug 21)

New Regulations

The DEC has decided to enact new regulations in four regions: Kaaterskill Falls, Kaaterskill Clove, Platte Clove, and Colgate Lake. They are designed to reduce accidents at Kaaterskill Falls, and poor behavior at the other sites. For example you cannot stand within 6' of any waterfall, hike in the dark, or party at these locations Click image for more details (Aug 16)

Rt 23a CLOSED

Rt 23a has been closed due to rain storm damage until further notice. Early indications are that the road could be close for an extensive period of time. Click image for more details (Aug 9)

Windham PA Enlarged

The DEC has agreed to enlarge the Elm Ridge Parking Area to 3x it's present size. Construction started this week, and will continue for August and maybe part of September. Click image for more details (Aug 8)

Pisgah Mtn Timber Sale

Elm Ridge Injury

On Saturday, July 21, 2018, a local woman hit her head on a beam at the Elm Ridge Lean to in Windham. She was knocked unconscious, and was semi-conscious when help arrived. She was flown to Albany Med, and has been there for almost a week. Click image for more details (Jul 21)

Girl falls 140' at KF

A teenage girl from New Jersey was walking below the Kaaterskill Falls platform to visit the Dog Monument when she fell on the steep trail down to the Dog Monument. She is estimated to have slide/fallen down 140' near the bottom of the middle basin. Click image for more details (Jul 8)

Blue Hole

To visit the Blue Hole swimming area, you MUST obtain a permit 24 hours PRIOR to visiting on weekends & holidays between May 15 and October 15th. You can obtain a permit on-line. Click image for more details (Jun 27)

Partying

On June 23, 2018, DEC Rangers, NY State Police, and Sheriffs Deputies arrived at the South Mountain Access near Pisgah Mtn to find 75 people drinking and partying. Several were issued tickets. Most were underage. Click image for more details (Jun 23)

Hiker Injured

A 50-year-old woman injured her ankle near the Biscuit Brook Lean-to. DEC rangers reached her and helped her hike part way back to the her car. They were met by the fire deparment with an ATV to extract her. . Click image for more details (Jun 10)

Hiker Injured

A teenage girl from Kingston was hiking around the middle basin of Kaaterskill Falls with her family when she injured her ankle. They were able to get her back to the bottom of the steps, but coundn't go any further. DEC Rangers and Paramedics were called in to extract her back to their car. A 39-year-old female hiker from Connecticut was hiking down towards Layman's Monument when she twisted her ankle. The rocks are very difficult to navigate near the Monument. Click image for more details (Jun 9)

Hikers Lost

Two hikers decided to hike to Sunset Rock near dusk. When they didn't return back to the campground hours later, DEC Rangers started a SAR. They were found near Ashley Falls without any lights. Click image for more details (Jun 6)

Diamond Notch Falls

A 42 year old man substained several injuries after a falling on the trail near Diamond Notch Falls. He was able to crawl down the path to the Falls. Search-and-Rescue was called in to help with the extraction. Click image for more details (May 28)

Grand Mal Seizure

A 25 year old woman had a seizure while returning from a hike to Huckleberry Point. She then went into cardiac arrest, and was revived by paramedics. We was airlifted to Albany Medical Center. Click image for more details (May 26)

New 3500 Record

On May 24, 2018, Mike Siudy broke the record for the fastest time to sumit all 35 peaks above 3500'. He shattered the previous record with a time of 2 days, 9 hours, 15 minutes. During the 57 hours he slept 1.5 hrs. Click image for more details (May 24)

Hypothermia Death

On May 12, 2018, a person was reported missing from NYC. His car was found at the Woodland PA. Rangers found him at the Terrance Lean-to with severe hypothermia. He died while being transported off the mountain. Click image for more details (May 12)

Illegal Signs

At the end of April of 2018, someone put up new No Parking signs at the end of Barnum Road. These signs are not official signs, and designed to prevent hikers from using this Trailhead. Click image for more details (Apr 22)

Hikers Stranded

Two Hikers from New Jersey set out to hike Blackhead Mountain. The trail was icy, and they didn't have proper foot gear for the ice. It took a very long time to reach the summit, and it became dark before they could get down to the bottom. They called 911 for help. Click image for more details (Feb 19)

Hiker Injured
