Scutt Rd -to- Stoppel Point -to- Black head Rng or Colgate

Unread post by dohdoh »

A group of four of us would like to do a long two day hike starting near the Scutt Road parking lot, camping overnight, and then continuing the next day to finish up the hike. I was thinking of hiking the trail up to Stoppel point and then finding somewhere off that trail to set up camp for the night. Then the next morning hiking over blackhead mountain either over Thomas Cole and Camel Hump, or instead ending at colgate lake road, or going north along the escarpment. Has anyone ever done any of these hikes? I've hiked to Stoppel Point but never the Black Head Range.
I'll take any suggestions for where to finish up and park the second car. Any suggestions for where to camp? I'd even take any suggestions for a completely different overnight hike one way or round trip!

thanks

I have hiked all those trails. A good spot to camp is a field 1.45 miles west of Dutchers Notch. It is 150' off the trail, and has a fire ring. There is a waterfall close by for water. It is an easy descent from Dutchers Notch to this field. Click here: http://www.catskillmountaineer.com/WB-colgate.html to view the map and pictures of the camping area. Very nice place to camp.

On day #2 I would hike back up to Dutcher's Notch and hike up Arizona Mtn to Blackhead - Black Dome - Thomas Cole - Camel's Hump - DEC PA (barnum rd). The following areas are difficult: Up to Arizona, Up & down Blackhead, up Black Dome. View from Blackhead are very good. Camel's Hump is nice in the Winter. Not sure how good it will be in the summer.

The alternative is to hike down the north side of Blackhead. It is very steep (45-50 degree) for several hundred vertical feet. The trail from Burnt Knob to WHP is often overgrown and difficult to follow.

The hike out to Colgate Lake is very flat and too short for a day hike. It is usually very muddy this time of year. It is a good trail for the Fall.

The trail from Colgate Lake to Dutcher's Notch is real nice. But, only if it is dry. But, it is an excellent camping spot. Beware that there are bears in that valley. Make sure you don't cook near your tent. You don't want the smell getting into the fabric on the tent, or your clothing.

Should be a real nice hike.
