Wilderness Rescue in the Town of Hunter in Greene County:
On June 28 at 1:42 p.m., Forest Ranger Dawson responded to a call for a hiker with an ankle injury near the Catskill Mountain House site. Ranger Dawson located the 29-year-old and assisted them back to the trailhead. Resources were clear at 2:30 p.m.
This site has a ledge in front of it. In 1650 an Egyptian Price was burned at the stake on Anvil Rock (in front of the old hotel), when he deviously murdered Chief Shandakan's only daughter, Lotowana on her wedding day. After 8,000 years of the Mohonk Indians living at North Lake in the summer, Chief Shandakan move to what is now called the Town of Shandakan. This area was vacant from 1650 until the Catskill Mountain House was built around 1825. Lotowana was buried under her favorite oak tree near North Lake.
