Rescue in the Kaaterskill Clove in the Town of Hunter in Greene County:
This story will evolve as more information is made available.
While they were crossing the Kaaterskill Creek above Fawn's Leap, a dog in the group got sweep over Fawn's Leap waterfalls. A person tried to rescue the dog by swimming in from the base of the falls and got stuck. A call to 911 brought in multiple agencies to rescue the dog and woman from a ledge by the falls.
The water has also been flowing heavy since the large storm went through the area last week. The Kaaterskill Creek gets fed from a number of sources upstream. So, when a storm comes in, the Kaaterskill Creek can rise significantly. Swimmers have died here due to under estimating the strength of the current. Furthermore, many swimming holes have been closed down over the past 10 years which has caused them to use the few remaining swimming holes available in the Catskill Mountains. Fawn's Leap has been a popular location, but has dangerous features that inexperienced swimmers know.
