Driving to Balsam Mt. trailhead on Beaverkill Road you pass what looks to have been at one point, a Buddhist structure or at least an orient looking structure. Anyone know what I'm talking about? What was it?

There are a number of similar buildings around the Catskills. Don't know much about them.

A lot of the places that look like Buddhist temples are, in fact, Buddhist temples, monasteries and retreat centers. An incomplete list of the ones in and near the Catskills:

Blue Cliff Monastery, Pine Bush
Catskill Zendo, Summitville
Dai Bosatsu Zendo, Livingston Manor
Dharma Drum, Pine Bush
Dharmakaya Retreat Center, Cochecton
Diamond Way Group, Oneonta
Kadampa Meditation Center, Glen Spey
Karma Triyana Dharmachakra, Woodstock (this one is right opposite the start of the trail to Overlook)
Mahayana Temple, Cairo
Menla Mountain Retreat, Phoenicia
Padma Samye Ling, Sidney Center
Shanti Mandir, Walden
Shaolin Temple, Fleischmanns
Sky Lake Lodge, Rosendale - this one looks like a regular old B&B, but is apparently also a Shambhala meditation center
Zen Mountain Monastery, Mount Tremper

Other related ones

Peace Village, Haines Falls - this one is Hindu, not Buddhist.
Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch, Woodbourne

In addition, there are a fair number of holdings that are owned by Buddhists and maintained as their private retreats. For whatever reason, the Catskills are popular with the Buddhists in America.
