Hey guys, i see on my 2010 maps that the 1st mile from the roadside parking is not on state land. I know the hike description says RT 3 is legal to travel on but i wanted to double check.

Do i need permission to hike from that route?
and if so, does anyone know the info for who to ask, or know where i can find it?

my only experience with calling for permission was to Bill Scholl for Graham (twice), which i found on the 3500 club site.. as for other hikes (35 or the lower 67) i have no idea where to look. Id hate to go without and give us hikers a bad name or to go and have my car towed!

I appreciate any help or info!

Chris

You can drive the road. The south side can be driven fairly easily. The north side is quite rough for a 4wd. Or, you can park on the side of the road by the turnaround. You don't need permission. You can see pictures of the road here: http://www.catskillmountaineer.com/BWF-vlybearpen.html

Ask Mike. He knows better then I do.

You can drive the road. The DOT has a right-of-way. Drive from the south to the pass. Hunters use the cabin next to the pass during hunting season, so I usually avoid Vly/Bearpen during hunting season. I would NOT drive down the north side. Deep erosion further down the road.
