Southern part of the Escarpment Trail

Unread post by mike »

On Saturday we wanted to hike on dirt instead of snow. So, we headed to North-South Lake and planned on hiking down to the Southern part of the Escarpment Trail. It was sunny, and we hoped to have a nice hike. When we arrived at the parking area where South Lake is, there was still snow on the ground. Maybe 2-4" of snow. It was crunchy, so we decided to hike with just Microspikes, and leave the snow shoes in the car.

We headed up the road to the old Hotel Road. It was actually getting slushy, and we began to regret leaving the snow shoes in the car. When we got up to the old Kaaterskill Hotel, the snow base was 6-9". We then hiked down to the Southern part of the Escarpment Trail. When we got to the Escarpment Trail, the snow was gone. But, just barely. We took off the Microspikes and started to hike on dirt. The trail was pretty dry. the views were very good.

We spent some time looking at Lower Viola Falls. We plan on hiking there soon. Not many people were on the trail, so it was quite enjoyable. We then hiked back up to the car in the snow. It was a great day to be out.

No body is going trout fishing at South Lake. Wow! Lots of snow. Hopefully in the next week a lot more snow will melt.
