I wasn't thinking of the former principals of a dead company trying to resurrect its copyrights; I was thinking more of whoever bought them at the fire sale suddenly realizing they might be worth something. In any case, my point was that nothing extinguishes a copyright other than its expiration (and none has expired since 1978). Every copyright is owned by someone, be it a creditor, a bankruptcy trustee, or an unknown heir. And there are no formalities whereby someone who wishes to use copyrighted material can trace its ownership, until and unless the owner comes forward (ususally by filing suit, or at least having an attorney send a demand letter).
