Trail Conditions

Unread post by dohdoh »

hi,
i'm wondering if anyone knows what type of trail conditions to expect this weekend? Is there any snow accumulation on the trails around North Lake?

You absolutely need Microspikes! Not enough snow around North-South Lake to use snowshoes. If you go to North Point, you will need cramp-ons. There is a LOT of ice on the trails. Some of the higher peaks 3500') have a 1/2' of snow base with LOTS of ice.

Last week we had a hiker coming down the North Access route to Kaaterskill High Peak who fell and broke his ankle. He was wearing cramp-ons. His cramp-ons broke loose and he slid into a tree.

I hiked up to Winter Clove Falls from Winter Clove Inn last weekend (below the Escarpment), and there is no snow or ice on the trail. Elevation was 1000-1250'.

There are expecting snow showers this week, but they are not expecting any accumulation. Just enough snow to cover up the ice.

There is still some good hiking out there. You just have to be careful.
