Hike with the YMCA

Unread post by mike »

Today I hiked with a friend of mind from Albany. He was doing a hike with the YMCA. It turned out to be a small group of people. About six people. Actually a nice group of people. Most were very experienced hikers for a casual afternoon hike. We met at the Schutt PA. After introductions, we headed down the road.

We first stopped at the Kaaterskill Hotel laundry (old saw mill). Talked a little about the Glen Mary, and then headed up the cross-country ski trail. Hiked up the old hotel carriage road to the 3rd ledge. We then walked into the Pine Orchard. Stopped at the view over South Lake at North Mtn. Then headed further into the Pine Orchard. Always enjoyable. Hiked down Puddingstone Hall, and then down to the Catskill Mtn House hotel site. Ate a little, and then headed to Boulder Rock. Stopped at Eagle Ledge.

We took a detour to the summit of South Mtn. Not much of a hike from the Eastern Escarpment. But, it is the highest spot. We then headed towards Boulder Rock. Stopped for lunch. Met a few other hikers. We then hiked towards Kaaterskill Hotel Site.

When we walked by Split Rock, Roleigh's terrier fell off Split Rock. Fortunately, he fell into leaves and pine needles. A 15-20' drop. Truly a heart-stopping moment. But the dog was fine, so we hiked on.

We then walked around the Kaaterskill Hotel Site. Everyone was amazed how large it was. We then walked down the road to the 4-corners. There were some thunderstorms floating around, but we never got caught in them.

Overall, it was a nice day of hiking. We hiked about 6.30 miles.

Yikes! That is quite a fall. Hope the dog is truly ok. I am always careful when walking past this spot. Just too easy to fall off.

At least you missed the rain showers.

In the winter you can easily slip off. Looks like you guys had a good time. No group photo?
