Studies have been done in NY showing that most streams don't have harmful bacteria or parasites. I know a few guys who don't sterilze their water at all. They drink it straight out of the stream. I suppose on a hot day, if it was left there all day, it might be safe. I guess if you needed an emergency supply of water, this would work.
