Dog dies from fall at Kaaterskill Falls

Dog Recovery: On Feb. 7 at 2:45 p.m., Forest Rangers responded to a request to recover a deceased dog at the Lower Falls of Kaaterskill Falls. Rangers Allwine, Dawson, Fox, Jackson, and Petit responded with technical gear to reach the dog in the icy conditions. The unleashed dachshund got away from its owner, slipped, and hit a fence. At 3:35 p.m., Rangers returned the deceased dog to its owner.
Please Note: If you hike near waterfalls, you should keep your dog leashed. This rule applied to both summer and winter. Only one person and one dog has survived a fall off the upper part of Kaaterskill Falls.
