On Sunday, I revisited the large bog on North Mtn with Mike Kudish and his assists. We drove into North-South lake and parked at the Mary Glen TH. We had to carry up some equipment with us, so the going was slower then normal. There were a few people at the falls, but we saw very few people the entire day. There were two girls at North Point, but no one on the way back. A very quiet day for August and excellent weather.
We hiked up the Mary Glen Trail. Then hopped on the Escarpment Trail and hiked up to North Point, and then to Lookout #2. After Lookout #2, we left the trail, when it turned north. Bushwhacking was slow. Lots of firs and conifers to push through. We bushwhacked about 3/4 of a mile. Weaving in-and-out of the trees to find a clear path. But, often we just had to push our way through the thick forest. Once we got to the bog, the conifers were horribly thick. You could be within 25' of the bog and never know it was there.
The bog is quite big. Mike K thinks it is about 2 acres, and it is well hidden. It was very thick with brush. Lots of animal paths through the bog. This included the many bears that live up there. There were a couple sleeping on the edge of the bog, but they left before we could get there. No shortage of bear scat on the way to the bog. Mike K believed that the peat was shallow, and it was. It ranged from 6-24" thick. There were two glacier layers, which was very unusual. The ph was also quite low, at 4.25. And, of course, we got quite muddy in the process.
Once we were done, we then hiked back to the car. About 5.5 miles.
Picture was taken in the Spring of 2016

Wow, that thing is big. It looks like it is the same size as the badman's cave bog. Real nice find!
Strange that no one has found it before.
