Seeking information about hill near Cairo and Round Top

Unread post by magicland »

I've noticed there is a very round, small hill (about 1200' elevation) located in between Hearts Content Rd (Route 31?) and Route 32 near Cairo. Here are the coordinates: 42.258808, -73.999286 . I can't seem to find any information about this location. It seems like it might have some nice views of the surrounding area. Looks like there might be some ATV trails based on the satellite imagery.

Anyone have further info about this location?

Best,
Ryan

It is all on private land. You can check with the Greene County GIS tax map to see if there is someone you might know that would give you permission

I am very interested in this 'hill' also, but its more of a mountain imo. 1400 feet rise, any which way you go, if you head straight up... looks snaky and wild and I'm sure some of those ledges have great views...

Wanted to add - I went up Cairo Roundtop last year. The aerial maps look fantastic for snakes.

It was a suprsingly easy walk. Almost too easy. And I was freightened of it lookign at maps, spent the year going on about 150 or so hikes to work up to it (I did 225 hikes to 133 sites in 7 states last year photographing snakes) Very open woods with a series of about 6 or 7 'steps' of ledges, only those near the bottom were high - maybe 25 feet. The rest were below 10 and easy to scale. Lots of grass and space between the trees. Fairly shaded - the rocks had few crevices, not great for snakes but at one point in time this could have been diferent - with less vegetation, who knows. I didnt get the feeling vipers were present. As i got higher up, this is the southwest side, trees were smaller, more dense, at the top area there were some dense bushes. Strange vegation, not much blueberry, just diferent. No vista, the view sucked. I came down the more shaded, normal-woodsy south side, along an old dirt atv road, got a little lost for a few minutes taking a short cut, but GPS took me right back to the small trail I started out on. Interesting hike but wouldnt do it again.

There's really not much there, didnt see many posted signs, maybe a few along the bottom. Without a view, I would tell anyone looking for a nice hike to skip it.

I had always been interested in hiking it. But, after reading your description I don't think I would go. I'm a view junkie. Thanks for the update. There are some vipors south of Round Top. Maybe they existing on Round Top years ago.
