Winter parking Blackhead Mountain + Balsam Mountain

Unread post by Manitou »

Is this forum still active? I would like clarification on the 4 required Winter hikes, specifically the parking.

Panther Mountain and Slide Mountain both have adequate parking, snow-plowed, easily accessible.

But the other two, Blackhead Mountain and Balsam Mountain, not so much.

Pls see attached pics, both recently taken ~0.5mile from the designated DEC parking for Blackhead Mountain (Big Hollow Road Parking Area / Trailhead, Maplecrest, NY 12454.

We don't mind if the parking lot is not plowed, we don't mind adding another ~0.5 mile to our hike. But the problem is the sign that reads NO PARKING SNOW-PLOW TURNAROUND; SCHOOL BUS TURNAROUND.

The Balsam Mountain parking (Rider Hollow Trailhead, Rider Hollow Rd, Arkville, NY 12406) is a good mile from the pavement road, at the end of a very narrow dirt road. And there does not appear to be anywhere to park on or near any pavement.

??? help ?
