Accident at Kaaterskill Falls

Unread post by dave »

On January 29, 2017, a 26-year old female fell off the lower part of Kaaterskill Falls around noon time. She is reported in serious condition, and was air lifted to Albany Medical Center. She is expected to survive the fall.

While the ice and snow was melting today, it can be difficult to determine what is wet, and what is icy. It is easy to be fooled. If hiking around ice, you should wear, at a minimum, microspikes.

Meanwhile in Platte Clove, it has been reported that there was one or two ice climbing accidents there.

Update on Jan 31 from the DEC - The first one occurred just after 1 p.m., when DEC Central Dispatch received a call reporting that a 26-year-old female who was hiking along the base of the upper falls at Kaaterskill Falls slipped and fell approximately 80 feet, suffering head trauma and other injuries. Nine Forest Rangers, assisted by several local fire department personnel, secured the victim and safely transported her to an awaiting helicopter, where she was airlifted to Albany Medical Center. The victim, who is in fair condition, was determined to be hiking on an undesignated trail.
