Bees on Ashokan High Point

Unread post by mike »

There is a yellow jacket nest on the north side of the loop trail about 3/4 of the way up. It is in a dip. Look for a dead tree (no top or bark) leaning north. AHP is known for it's yellow jackets. This year is no different.

There is also a hornet nest on the south look. It is shoulder height on a small tree. It is now about the size of a baseball. Bound to get a lot bigger and nastier.

If you want blueberries, you might have a little pain getting them. Bears have been up the north loop for the berries.

Hey Mr. bobcat that is frightening situation on Ashokan High Point! The bear might be happy about the yellow jackets.

If you are allergic to bees, I would avoid Ashokan High Point right now.

I got nailed by yellow-jackets today from head-to-toe. With all this rain, they have been really bad.

Thinking about hiking AHP this weekend, weather permitting.
The temps are predicted to be around the low 60's for the area (just looking at Kingston's forecast, fwiw) so assuming it'll be colder up on the mountain, would bees still be a problem?
I figure the bears might still be around too but I'm not too worried about them.
Any info is greatly appreciated.

Most of the bees are now gone. It was below freezing on Sunday Night. I haven't seen any since last week.

The bears will be out into December.

AHP should be a good hike this weekend. Go for it!

That's good to know.
I'll probably head up early Sunday morning as the weather looks to be decent.
Thanks for the reply Mtnclimber.
