2014 Fall Foliage

The leaf foliage is just getting started. There is a small amount of browning of some leaves. There are a few small pockets of changing leaves in the NE Catskills. mainly on the north side of Acra Point and Windham High Peak. If you live outside the Catskill Mtn, now is NOT the time to come and see the fall foliage. We suspect that we are still 2 weeks away.

Also - since we had a wet Spring there is the potential of vibrant colors. BUT, only if we get a good freeze. If we don't get a cold snap, then we will have an ordinary Fall Foliage. Too early to make that determination. This coming weekend is suppose to be warmer then normal. Right now we do not see a cold snap in the forecast for the next week.

1,000'+ elevation - <5% changed - 0% Fallen
2,400'+ elevation - <5% changed - 0% Fallen
3,500'+ elevation - <5% changed - 0% Fallen
Browning: Moderate

Wow! What a difference a week makes. The leaf foliage has accelerated significantly. This coming weekend (Oct 4/5) will be the peak. The North side of the mountains shows significant leaf change, while the south side has been particularly slow in changing. So, when visiting there will be areas where the foliage will be at or even over 100%, where other areas may only be 25-50%.

1,000'+ elevation - <35% changed - 5% Fallen
2,400'+ elevation - <65% changed - 15% Fallen
3,500'+ elevation - <100% changed - 25% Fallen
Browning: Moderate to significant

Looking from Rt 23 (Windham) towards Windham High Peak at 1800'. The south face part of Mt Zoar only has 25% foliage change, where the north side of WHP has 100% foliage change.

The leaf foliage continues to change. We are now past peak, but there are still a lot of color on the mountains. If you are thinking of heading up to the Catskills this weekend, you should still be able to see some good color. But, this will probably be the last weekend to see good leaf foliage on the Mountaintop. Roundtop continues to approach peak, but they are at a lower elevation.

1,000'+ elevation - <60% changed - 35% Fallen
2,400'+ elevation - <100% changed - 50% Fallen
3,500'+ elevation - <100% changed - 100% Fallen
Browning: Moderate to significant

We are now past the peak on the Mountaintop. But, you may be able to still get some leaf foliage if you stay at Winter Clove Inn in Round Top. It is hitting peak this weekend there. Rip's Ledge, Winter Clove Falls, and Countryman Kill Falls are all great hikes.

1,000'+ elevation - <90% changed - 50% Fallen
2,400'+ elevation - <100% changed - 90% Fallen
3,500'+ elevation - <100% changed - 100% Fallen
Browning: Moderate to significant

We are now past the peak on the Mountaintop. But, you may be able to still get some leaf foliage if you stay at Winter Clove Inn in Round Top. It is past peak this weekend at the lowest elevations. The Hudson Valley (below 1,000') is at peak.

1,000'+ elevation - <100% changed - 75% Fallen
2,400'+ elevation - <100% changed - 10% Fallen
3,500'+ elevation - <100% changed - 100% Fallen
Browning: Moderate to significant

This will be the last report for the Fall foliage this year.

So it's 100% changed <5% fallen or 0% changed <5% fallen...or 100% not fallen <5% changed I'm confused. I'm sure there is a typo in there somewhere
From your text it would seem that there is very little change, but from your percentages it would seem that I missed the foliage O.o

Cut & paste from last year. Not so much in the proof reading before posting :o But, it is corrected now. Thanks for the heads up!

Can't believe how much the trees have changed in the past couple of days. A week ago there were just a few trees changing. In some areas it is at peak.
