What size of snowshoes do I need?

Unread post by mtnclimber »

I have a pair of 24-25" snowshoes. I weight about 170 lbs. With the snow so deep, will these shoes be too small? I am concerned that I will sink in too far and get wear out too fast. Any suggestions?

With the amount of snow in the NE catskills you will be sinking in further then you would like no matter which shoes you are using. But, longer shoes will be better. 36" will be best, followed by 30", and last 25". You will be exhausted fairly quickly no matter which shoes you use. You might want to think about an area that doesn't have as much snow. Blackhead will have a massive amount of snow. I wouldn't be surprised if they have 8-10' on or near the top. WHP will have lots of snow too. Hope this helps. I have two 30" pairs. I can loan you a pair. I will be out at the building tomorrow.

I think that 30" shoes would be your best bet this weekend. The small amount of extra weight will be worth not sinking in so far.
