3,500'+ elevation - 100% changed - 100% Fallen

We are now well past peak. This year the colors changed very quickly. This will be the last weekend for colors. By next weekend, almost all of the leaves will be down.

2,400'+ elevation - 100% changed - 75% Fallen
3,500'+ elevation - 100% changed - 100% Fallen
October 13, 2011
Higher elevations had a good freeze on the 5th and 6th. This quickly accelerated the changing of the leaves. But, there is still a lot of brown leaves. We reached the peak this week. In some places we pasted the peak. This will be the last weekend for colors. By next weekend, many of the leaves will be down.
1,000'+ elevation - 80% changed - 25% Fallen
2,400'+ elevation - 100% changed - 35% Fallen
3,500'+ elevation - 100% changed - 50% Fallen

In some places we pasted the peak, and in other areas, we are not close to peak. But, this year there will be very little good color (reds, oranges, and yellows). Lots of brown leaves
Lots of brown leaves and few red, orange, and yellow colors so far.

Higher elevations had a good freeze on the 5th and 6th. Should cause the good colors to start coming out. But, there is still a lot of brown leaves. The rain we had earlier in the week cause some of the leaves to come down. Most people are seeing leaves changing by the side of the road. Inside the woods, the change percentage is less. Next weekend will probably be the peak.
Lots of brown leaves and few red, orange, and yellow colors so far.
1,000'+ elevation - 10% changed - 5% Fallen
2,400'+ elevation - 25% changed - 5% Fallen
3,500'+ elevation - 45% changed - 10% Fallen
September 29, 2011
There has been a number of trees that are turning brown. We just have not had a good freeze to make the colors pop.
Lots of brown leaves and few red, orange, and yellow colors this year.
Peak usually occurs from Oct 10 to Oct 20. But, each year is different.
1,000'+ elevation - 10% changed - 0% Fallen
2,400'+ elevation - 20% changed - 0% Fallen
3,500'+ elevation - 35% changed - 0% Fallen

Re: 2011 Leaf Foliage
Hello,
New to the group, but have been an avid hiker for years. Last month hiked Algonquin in ADKS. I have off a few days this week and was hoping to do some hiking/viewing of Fall Foliage. Any suggestions of a reasonable place to stay? I am coming from PA.
Thanks!
Wendy

Welcome to the forum Wendy. It really depends upon where you are going hiking. Unfortunately, there is not one place you can go to find a good place. Once we know where you want to hike we can make some suggestions.
Finding a reasonably priced place can be a challenge. If you like the camp, then North-South Lake is the best. Open until around Oct 25th ?

Re: 2011 Leaf Foliage
Greg. The leaves have been starting to change quite a bit over the last couple of days. In our percentage chart, we try to not include leaves that are brown. Once we get to around 40-50% we look at the percentage of green versus other colors. But, in the beginning we don't want people to think that that there are good colors. A little confusing.
Yes, temperature is not the only thing that makes them change. But, a good freeze will make the colors pop. But, you made a very good point.
Hopefully, we will get some cold weather soon. A little too hot for me today.

Re: 2011 Leaf Foliage
Challenging mountains would be:
1. Wittenburg, Cornell, and Slide - must be done from Woodland Valley due to Rt 47 being closed.
2. Devil's Path
3. Blackheads
If you like bushwhacks, then try:
1. North Dome & Sherrill
2. Friday and Balsam Cap.
All of these hikes are listing on this web site. Wittenburg, Cornell, and slide are probably the closest. But, lodging might be challenging. Mainly because most of the places are by the creek, and many were flooded recently. So, this region might be difficult from the lodging side.

We believe that the weekend of the 15th will be the peak. With a freeze on the 5th and 6th, we might start to see some real colors in the next week.

It seemed like a slow motion car wreak. The leaves were changing ever so slowly. Then someone fast fowarded it. It was over in a flash! WOW!
