Blackhead 5/26/2013 - Freak Snow Storm

Unread post by TrunksWD »

I ended up hiking Blackhead today. I had heard about the snow the day before, so I figured to see how much there was. It felt like spring by the car, so I wasn't expecting more than a few patches. I couldn't have been more wrong. We first saw snow just below 3,500' on the escarpment trail. and there ended up being a few inches of quickly melting snow at the top. The trail had turned into a stream towards the top. This was also my brother's second high peak.

Water level was pretty high.

2 feet that is crazy? The snow in the Catskills will probably be gone in the next couple of days. It was nice to see some snow. Really a shame it won't last.

So strange to see green leaves and snow. At least someone got the chance to hike in it.

Wow. Your post is terrific. My friend, Paul, and I are new to hiking in the Catskills. We went Zipling at Hunter Mountain yesterday and had a blast. We wanted to try some of the trails but we were little overwhelmed by all the choices. We plan to try a few of the easier ones in July on our next trip. Doing a ton of research, talking to folks and taking lots of precautions. Thanks for your post!

Jon - That is insane! Nearly 3 feet of snow in late May must be unheard of. I wonder how much fell on Marcy since it is a much bigger mountain.

Mike - I couldn't resist and I figured it was a good chance to show my brother hiking in the snow for the first time. Though I wasn't expecting so much and the trail to have turned into a stream. It was also his first time rock scrambling.

God's Country - It is always best to over prepare.
