Balsam Mtn. (Ulster), Access to

Unread post by dpk »

I'm considering doing Balsam Mtn.this Saturday. Does anybody know if either Rider Hollow Rd. or McKinley Hollow Rd. is passable up to their respective parking areas?

I've done it from McKinley Hollow and there are houses right by the trail head, so the road should be fine to drive on.

You never know about Rider Hollow. I have hiked from there in the Winter a number of times. Usually it is plowed. But, water does run across the parking lot and it can become an ice sheet. I suspect that they got less snow then the eastern side of the Catskills.

The trail from Rider Hollow does have some water crossings. McKinley Hollow is much steeper.
