On Tuesday evening, July 29, 2014 a 23-year-old woman fell off Kaaterskill Falls. EMS and local fire companies were called to scene last night. She was declared dead at the scene. Local fire companies recovered her body from the base of the falls. Her name has not been released yet. More information to follow this report.
Update (07/30): The hiker has been identified as, Ariana Bedka of Wappingers Falls. She was visiting the top of the Falls with a friend around 7pm. Unfortunately, she was wearing flip flops. Witnesses stated that she tripped and fell, causing her to tumble over the Falls. She fell between 150' to 167' to the rocks below. The basin of water projects out further, so when people fall off the Falls they usually fall onto the rocks below.
It is important to wear appropriate foot wear, and NEVER stand on the very edge of the waterfall. Here is a guide on safety around waterfalls: http://www.catskillmountaineer.com/WF-safety.html
