On Thursday Morning (April 15, 2014), a 50 foot section of the notch broke loose and caused a land slide onto Rt 42 in the notch region. The NYS DOT has closed the road, and does not know when it will open again. With heavy rains expected Friday night, more land slides might occur.

Geologist have examined the region, but no plan has been created to stabilize the steep banks.

Rt 42 also had a land slide in 2011 during Hurricane Irene. Rt 42 was closed for 6 months. In 2011 the road was clogged with tree bundles that were difficult to remove.

If you need to travel in this region it is suggested to use Rt 214.

Hikers who want to go up Spruceton Road should travel through Hunter, NY to access the Spruceton Valley.

I heard that Rt 42 might open the end of next week. They need to clear the road, and if the bank is safe they might open it again.

Here is a map of Rt 42. The slide is in the Deep Notch. Right next to where the land slide was during Hurricane Irene. You have Sleeping Lion Mtn on the west side and Balsam Mtn on the east side.

Rt 42 will be opened today to vehicle traffic through the Deep Notch. So, the entire road will be open to traffic in both directions. :)
