On Thursday Morning (April 15, 2014), a 50 foot section of the notch broke loose and caused a land slide onto Rt 42 in the notch region. The NYS DOT has closed the road, and does not know when it will open again. With heavy rains expected Friday night, more land slides might occur.
Geologist have examined the region, but no plan has been created to stabilize the steep banks.
Rt 42 also had a land slide in 2011 during Hurricane Irene. Rt 42 was closed for 6 months. In 2011 the road was clogged with tree bundles that were difficult to remove.
If you need to travel in this region it is suggested to use Rt 214.
Hikers who want to go up Spruceton Road should travel through Hunter, NY to access the Spruceton Valley.
