The Department of Environmental Conservation has issued the following press release:

Cairo Man Fined for Bear Poaching

NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Police charged Joseph Budz, 40, of Cairo, Greene County, with killing a black bear during the closed season on May 29, 2013.

Mr. Budz admitted firing his rifle at a 150 pound black bear he saw walking in the back yard of his residence. The bear was reportedly not acting in an aggressive or destructive manner. The bear was transported to DEC's wildlife pathology lab in Albany County where a necropsy determined that the bear was killed by a single gunshot and that the bear was moving away from the shooter when struck.

On June 25, Mr. Budz entered into a civil compromise and paid a $752.50 penalty at the Cairo Town Court to settle the misdemeanor charge.
