The Catskill Mountains has received very little rain this summer. This has caused streams and springs to dry up. In fact, it is one of the driest Summers since 1956. The DEC is asking hikers to voluntarily avoid building fires while camping and hiking until we get a good rain. We are at a high fire alert level. There have already been a number of small forest fires in the Catskill Mountains and Adirondack Mountains. Earlier this week, there was a forest fire in St Huberts in the Adirondacks. You can read and see photos of that fire here.. Remember, you cannot have fires and camp above 3500'. If you need to cook food, use a small stove to cook.

You also have to watch for deer when driving. They are out looking for water. Seen more this week, then the rest of the year.

It is very dry out. Very easy to have a large forest fire.

Does anyone know of Kaaterskill Falls has dried up. There is a picture from the 1800's where it is completely dry.

The rain we have had over the past couple of days has really helped reduce the fire danger. But, we will still need a good 5" rain storm to soak down further.
