Logging accident leaves man in critical condition

A Thursday accident in Colchester left one man in critical condition, state police at Sidney said. Robert Moses, 65, and Gerard Benedict, 65, were working as volunteers for the Finger Lakes Trail Conference in woods off of Holiday Brook Road when the accident occurred.

Their addresses were not available Friday night.

They were clearing a hiking trail when Moses used a chainsaw to cut a tree hanging across a trail, troopers said.

As it fell, it struck another dead tree, causing a branch to fall and strike Benedict, who wasn't wearing a helmet, in the head.

He suffered severe head trauma and was taken to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City.

He was still listed in critical condition Friday night, a nursing supervisor said.
