Some counties in update New York are seeing a large surge in Anaplasmosis Cases. People get Anaplasmosis from ticks. The Catskill Mountains have less ticks then the hudson valley. But, some areas have significant numbers of them. Especially, hikes that have high grass areas, or bushwhacks. Where you find deer and mice, you will find ticks.

According to the CDC symptoms of Anaplasmosis occur 1-5 days after being bitten. Early symptoms are: Fever, Chills, severe headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. It can resemble the flu. Many people are fooled by early symptoms. Later in the disease cycle symptoms are: Respiratory failure, Bleeding problems, Organ failure, and death. The most common choice for treatment is the drug, "Doxycycline" from your doctor or urgent care center.

June and July are the most common months to contract Anaplasmosis. New York is one of the high-risk states.

The best way to prevent being bitten by a tick, is to stray your pants (outside) with Sawyers permethrin. Let your pants dry before wearing. Keep your pets away from your pants until they dry. Deet is not particularly effective. Picaridin is more effective against mosquitos, and mildly effective against ticks. Permethrin is safe for humans, but necessarily safe for some pets and bees.
