On July 1, 2019 a person was hiking in the Vernooy Kill Falls area (Sundown Wild Forest) in the South western portion of the Catskill Mountains, when they were tagged by a Timber Rattlesnake. A helicopter was called in to extract them to a hospital. In the past Kingston Hospital carried the CroFab anti-venom. But, with changes in the hospitals in Kingston, it is reported that they person was airlifted to NYC. This is a developing story, so more details will follow.

Timber Rattlesnakes are well known to be found around Vernooy Kill Falls and around Balsam Swamp (between Greenville Road and Vernooy Kill Falls). It is always best to stay on the trail, and keep an eye out for them.

Most Timber Rattlesnakes are very tolerant of people. But, if you step on them, they will strike. Often times, they will not move from their location. You can read more about them here: http://www.catskillmountaineer.com/animals-snakes.html
