Serious Injury at Kaaterskill Falls

Unread post by dave »

On January 13, 2019 around 5pm EMS received a phone call of a someone who fell off Kaaterskill Falls and was injured. He was a 60-year-old man, and he had sustained a serious leg injury, and was hypothermic. Several local fire departments had to deploy a rope system to reach the man. The SAR had to be performed on the dark, which make the job more difficult. At this time we do not know if he was a hiker or ice climber. And, we do not know how long he was there before EMS could reach him. More information to follow.

Updated 01/23/19: The person who was injured was a 66-year-old man from the city of Hudson. The trail up to Kaaterskill Falls has been very icy along with the stairs. He was wearing sneakers and didn't have microspikes or cramp-ons. He slipped on the ice and fell, and this caused a serious injury to his hip. He then attempted to crawl from Kaaterskill Falls back to his car, which was approximately a half mile away. While attempting to crawl back to his car, he encountered another hiker who called 911. DEC Rangers, local fire departments, and paramedics helped bring him out to Rt 23a to be transported to the hospital.
