Hiker dies while hiking on Huckleberry Point Trail

Wilderness Recovery: On August 24, state and local police and Forest Rangers responded to a report of a male hiker who collapsed on a hiking trail to Huckleberry Point in the Kaaterskill Wild Forest. The deceased was identified as John Hopkins of Rhinebeck NY. He was hiking with a friend when he collapsed. His friend called for help. DEC Rangers and Paramedics from Hunter NY responded quickly. They attempted CPR, but were unsuccessful. It was later determined by the Corner that he died of a heart attack.

Rhinebeck - John G. Hopkins, 65, of Rhinebeck, NY passed away Friday, August 24, 2018 in Hunter, NY. Born in Poughkeepsie on September 4, 1952, he was the son of the late Howard F. and Beverly Davis Hopkins. John was a 1970 graduate of FDR High School in Hyde Park. A local resident most of his life, he previously lived in Salt Lake City. John started his career in retail working for Lucky Platt's and then at Macy's in Salt Lake City. John is survived by his 3 sisters and their husbands; Diane and Berry Fowler of Staatsburg, NY, Joann and Dan Perotti of Clinton, NY and Kristine and Todd Kortright of Warwarsing, NY. Also surviving is his great-niece Nicki Kortright. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his life-partner, Bill Bronson and his faithful dog Sammy. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 from 11:00am - 12:00pm. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00pm, following visitation, and burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery.
