DEC Acquires Vroman's Nose Parcel in Schoharie County

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Keith Goertz today announced DEC's acquisition of 139 acres in the town of Fulton, Schoharie County. The property, known as Vroman's Nose, was donated to DEC by the Vroman's Nose Preservation Corporation (VNPC).

"Vroman's Nose is a local jewel that contains a portion of the Long Path trail, sweeping views of the Schoharie Valley, nesting peregrine falcons and a unique geology that makes it one of the most recognizable landscapes in the area," Goertz said. "DEC appreciates the exceptional stewardship of the property undertaken by VNPC and their generosity in donating this iconic land to the state."

The recorded history of Vroman's Nose goes back to the founding of the country. The property, which juts about 600 feet above the Schoharie Valley floor, was ceded to Adam Vroman by the British in the early 1700s. In 1983, faced with the possibility that a restaurant might be built on top of Vroman's Nose, a small group of Adam Vroman's descendants banded together to purchase the property and created the preservation corporation to manage the area for public use.

In recent years, public use of the property increased significantly and the VNPC recognized a need for adequate resources to manage the property and reached out to DEC for assistance in preserving the property in perpetuity.

Chairman of the Schoharie County Board of Supervisors Earl VanWormer III said, "Schoharie County has long been proud of Vroman's Nose, a treasure for our residents and visitors to enjoy. Now there will be more access to residents in our state and regionally. This will be great for businesses and tourism in Schoharie County."

Fulton Town Supervisor Philip Skowfoe Jr. said, "I would like to thank the state for accepting the donation of Vroman's Nose and for protecting and preserving it for generations to come."

Vroman's Nose Preservation Corporation President Susan Vroman Walker said, "The Vroman's Nose Preservation Corporation is proud to transfer ownership of Vroman's Nose to the Department of Environmental Conservation. The State of New York will preserve the historic and scenic property for the good of the public and keep it forever wild."

DEC will manage this property as the Vroman's Nose Unique Area to protect its outstanding natural resources and to accommodate appropriate public use.
