Acra Point Forest Fire

This weekend a group of hikers decided to camp illegally on the trail near Acra Point. They then build a fire for the evening. The next morning they hiked off while the camp fire continued to burn. The fire then spread to roots under the fire, and then to some trees nearby. Thankfully, another group of hikers discovered the fire and called 911. With more luck, Ranger Breigle was about a 1/2 mile away. Between the Ranger and the group, they were able to put the fire out. If it was discovered, it would have caused a raging forest fire that probably would have burned Acra Point, Windham High Peak, Blackhead, Burnt Knob and more.

The rules are that camping must be 150' away from a trail, road, or water source. You cannot camp above 3500' in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. People should try to use Lean-to's and designated camping areas. Also use good judgment when conditions are dry and/or windy.

This is the quarry/pond by Kaaterskill Hotel site. It is almost complete dry.

It is VERY dry out right now! People need to be careful.
