Hiking Group lost on Panther Mtn

Unread post by dave »

Late in the day on Saturday, June 17, 2017, the hiking leader called Central Dispatch that they were lost on Panther Mountain. The 24-year-old hiking leader stated that they were running out of water, and their battery on the cell phones were low. They had started at the Giant Ledge trail head, and hiked to Giant Ledge, and then on to Panther Mountain. Apparently, they hiked past the summit and down the Fox Hollow Trail. When it got late in the day, they became concerned that they were lost. So, they called DEC Central Disptach for help. The DEC sent out Forest Ranger Russell Martin and Nathan Shea. Ranger Shea hiked up the Fox Hollow Trail head. He was able to find the group of hikers on the trail after the sun had set. They were exhausted and didn't have headlamps, so he provided them to the hikers. He also provided the hikers with water. He then helped them back to the Giant Ledge Trail Head where their cars were located. This hike is located in the Town of Shandaken, and is in Ulster County.
