On Sunday, 23, 2016, a female hiker got lost while on the Snowmobile Trail on the Kaaterskill Mountain Range. She had parked at the end of Gillespie Road on DEP land at the end of the road. She had bushwhacked up to the Snowmobile Trail and got lost. Just before 2pm, she called 911 to get help. While waiting for help two other hikers encountered her, and helped her out of the woods. Four DEC Rangers drove to the end of Gillespie Road and bushwhacked up to the Snowmobile Trail. The female hiker then called the Rangers and they hiked towards each other. They then escorted her back to the parking area at the end of Gillespie Road. She was back to the parking lot around 4pm.

We should also note, that while we have had a drought this summer, the Snowmobile Trail is almost always wet and muddy. The previous day, we had a significant amount of rain, which would have filled up the trail with water. It can be very difficult moving down the trail with water and mud. It was also very windy.

Glad she was found. I see ATVs are still using the trail. sad that there is no enforcement out there.

The Lawn place on Rt 23a used to run ATV's over the SMT. But, the DEC caught them and they were fined dearly. Sounds like they might be back doing it again.
