Rt 23a Road Work this Fall

Unread post by dave »

During the Fall of 2016, the New York State DOT will be performing slope repairs on Rt 23a between Palenville, NY and Haines Falls, NY. Construction will be suspended during the Winter months, but will restart again in 2017. Here is a statement from the NYS DOT:

Slope Repairs to Reduce Route 23A to Single Lane in Greene County

Motorists are advised that work to repair a series of slopes Route 23A between Haines Falls and Palenville, in the towns of Hunter and Catskill in Greene County, is scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept. 19.

Traffic will be reduced to a single alternating lane controlled by traffic signals starting Tuesday, Sept. 20. The exact location of the lane closures will depend upon the pace of work on the slopes. However, no more than two temporary traffic signal pairs are expected to be active at any given time.

Work will occur during the remainder of the current construction season and continue through the 2017 construction season.

In October, during weekday dates to be announced, Route 23A along the entire project area, from just east of Haines Falls to the Kaaterskill Creek Bridge in Palenville, will need to be fully closed to allow for delivery of concrete stabilizer pods to the work sites and placement of these pods off the roadway (because of their weight, the stabilizer pods cannot be left on the roadbed). During the closure period, traffic will be directed to a signed detour route using Routes 32, 23 and 296.

The work is part of a $3.4 million contract by the New York State Department of Transportation to repair at least 10 slope areas on the Mountain Cloves Scenic Byway section of Route 23A in Greene County. In the past, emergency closures of this section of Route 23A have occurred following slope failures caused by flooding from the Kaaterskill Creek. The Department of Transportation will repair slope areas to minimize the chance of future slope failures that could lead to extended highway closures.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.

Is there a website where I can check the dates? Living in Saugerties I was planning maybe to go to North Point this coming Wednesday. I would take 23A as my normal travel route up. Regards
