When I click the link to download any GPX route from this site, internet explorer opens a page of code. How can I download the route with data in proper form to then copy over to the Garmin (which step I do know how to accomplish)? Thx..from a newbie on this site.

Your Garmin should be able to use the gdb format.

And just save them into the custom maps folder?

GPX was popular about 10 years ago. It was replaced by the gdb files for Garmin.

I think it's because the GPX file is a form of xml, which can be opened and viewed by web-browsers. When you click on a .gpx link the browsers views the text, as opposed to saving the file.

You can still use the GPX file format, You will need to force the browser to download instead of view. Instead of just clicking on the file link, right-click (or whatever you do with a mac) on the file link and click on "save link as" and then make sure it has the file extension .gpx. Then you can use mapsource(or your program of choice) to open the file.

I just tried it out on my comp and downloading the GPX and GDB both worked.
