DEP acquires Lake Heloise north of Windham
NYC DEP has now acquired the land around Lake Heloise north of Windham New York. The DEP did not purchase the remaining 8 acres where the dam is. They didn't want the liability in the case of a failure of the dam. At one time, the owner of the land wanted 6.8 million for 304 acres.

I would have preferred to see the DEC buy it. Could have been an exceptional recreational area. We'll see how it turns out. I suspect that someday the DEP will restrict access to this wonderful area.

I hiked up to Hayden from Sutton Road. The weeds were terrible. I talked with the trail maintainer. He said that they trail from Lake Heloise to the ridge is pretty rough. It is a better winter hike. Finding views of the lake is very difficult
