Joe Martens - New DEC Comm

Unread post by dave »

NYS Governor Cuomo as picked Joe Martens to be the new DEC Commissioner. He still has to be confirmed by the NYS Senate. Presently Joe Martens is president of the Open Space Institute in NYC. He is known as the kind of guy who can find a way to get things done. He has been instrumental in land purchases, such as, the 10,000-acre Tahawus property; The 2,350-acre Camp Little Notch in Fort Ann, and was instrumental in the 161,000-acre Finch Pryun purchase by the the Nature Conservancy's, and later conservative easement.

In a recent interview, Joe Martens has been quoted in that the DEC will have to find a way to get the community more involved in these difficult financial times. Many people find this idea refreshing. Most groups are very happy with the appointment.

Before his involvement with OSI, Joe Marten worked for former Governor Mario Cuomo, the Adirondack Park Agency, the NYS Office of Budget, Deputy Secretary to the Governor for Energy and the Environment, and ORDA.

Joe Martens educational background qualifications are BS in Resource Economics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He received a MS in Resource Management from the SUNY, College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University.
