New DEC Commissioner named

Governor Paterson announced that he is naming Deputy Secretary for the Environment Peter Iwanowicz has been named Acting Commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Iwanowicz replaces Pete Grannis, who was fired by the Paterson on October 21, for a memo that was leaked to the media criticizing cutbacks at the DEC. Paterson had also wanted to lay off another 209 employees at the end of the year.
Iwanowicz was appointed as deputy secretary for the environment. He will continue to serve in both positions for no additional pay. Prior to that he serviced as the Director of Climate Change in New York. Prior to that he served as VP of American Lung Association of NYS.
Once a new governor is elected, they will assign their own DEC commissioner.
