I was wondering if most black bears are hibernating at this time (Jan 9). It's been a pretty mild winter so far and maybe there are still some bears roaming around trails. Anyone has seen some bears lately? I haven't, was just curious...
Thanks,
Marc

Black bears usually go into hibernation around the beginning of December. But, due to the warm temperatures they have been out. Black bears do sometimes come out of hibernation for a brief period during a normal winter.
Quite a few people have been seeing tracks, scats, and sightings.

The only problem I see is if they are like me, when I wake up I'm hungry and I don't think there is really any food for them now?

Without the snow pack, they are able to dig and find nuts. The one I saw went right for where the oak trees are. He was looking for acorns.
