Bobcats making a recover - but slowly

Unread post by dave »

In March of 2010, the Catskill Mountains received a single snowstorm with 7' of snow in the valleys and 8' on some of the mountain peaks. Bobcats were the most significant species affected by the snow. Over 99% of them died. In six months of searching the Catskills only one Bobcat was found in the Spruceton Valley. Prior to this there were 500-1000 bobcats. Then in the Fall of 2010 a Bobcat came out of the Hudson valley and moved into the Kaaterskill Mtn Range. In the past month 3rd bobcat has been found in North-South lake. It is believed that he moved in within the last couple of weeks. It will probably take another 10-20 years for them to recover. Here is a picture of their tracks:

Bobcats in the Catskill Mountain stay up in the mountain, and don't exist to the valleys. That is what made them die off last March when the mountaintops got 8' of snow in places. Rabbits and many other animals didn't emerge from under the snow for 3-4 weeks. They will come back. It will just take time.

Plenty of rabbits and squirrels around north/south lake for them.
