New DEC Proposed Rules for Black Bears

The New York State DEC is proposing changes to the laws regarding Black Bears. Last year a person in Hunter NY was feeding Black Bears. Her feeding led to the female black bear and her cubs to start breaking into homes to find food. This led to the destruction of the mother bear and her cubs by the DEC. This particular person was very defiant in recommendations on her to stop feeding the bears. A feed bear is a dead bear. Recently, people in Hunter NY have asked the DEC to reduce the number of bears. The DEC told the people that they just need to reduce the available food sources. The bears go where the food is. People need to stop intentionally feeding bears, and making garbage available to bears, and removing bird seed from open bird feeders. It should be noted that Kaaterskill Mountain Range and Colgate Lake have the highest bear density populations in New York State.

The problem isn't with the bears. The problem is with the people who are directly or indirectly feeding the bears.

Over the last 30 years we have seen a 10 fold increase in population of black bears. We have also seen a decrease of hunters, which helps increase the population.

But, at the same time bears go to where the food is. Just like any other animal. If humans have food that is easy to get and is plentiful, then bears learn that people have what they want. Bears will then visit our homes on a regular basis.

I know one of the delivery guys refused to delivery boxes to the women because she was so defiant about feeding the bears.
