Unread post by mike »

Does anyone know if the ice in Kaaterskill Clove is strong enough for ice climbing yet?

There is a lot of ice that has formed, but with the warm weather we had over the last week, it has become too weak. I traveled up Rt 23a, and the ice flows looked good and well formed. Once it turns cold tomorrow, it should be climbable. I should also note that the 1-2 inches of rain we got in the last couple of days have helped a lot. You can see the steam and rim coming off the top of Viola, Wildcat, and Buttermilk Falls. Buttermilk rim spray was very noticeable. The flow down Lake Creek was excellent. Should be good climbing available in the next day or two.

If I go hiking this weekend, I will check on Rt 23a.

I have not stopped by North Lake to see how the ice is doing.
