Lodging recomendations near Hunter/Palenville

Unread post by NHBill »

So, I get together with a few friends from college every year and go hiking. We usually go up to the ADK's but this year, due to some schedule issues we're going a little later so we decided to try some place new. We have some potential hikes planned around the Hunter, NY area and now we are looking for someplace to rent for a weekend.

We're not hell raisers (at least not any more :D ) but do tend to stay up late and bullshit, so we would prefer not to be in a bunch of separate rooms someplace. We're pretty self sufficient so a cabin/cottage, if possible, but would consider anything that's reasonable.

Dates would be 10-19 to 10-21. At least 3 of us and hopefully all 5. Any suggestions :?: ?

Not too many cottages in this region. A fav for locals is the Winter Clove Inn. The price is reasonable and the rates are good. It is a hotel instead of a motel, so there is an area on the first floor where you can sit and talk. There is a nice fireplace. You can check it out here: http://www.winterclove.com . It is just north of Palenville. Maybe a few minutes from Palenville. There is some good hiking from the hotel too.

The Little Stoppel Loop is one of my favorite hikes. It follows the Yankee Smith trail to 5 small waterfalls. I then take the old logging roads to a spot just below stoppel point. I then follow the ridge line down (unofficial trail). Stop at Little Stoppel Point for lunch and pics. Then hike back down to the hotel.

Just love Winter Clove Inn. They also have a another play area in the building across the road on the front of the hotel. Lots to do. Half the price of some of the motels on the mountaintop (Hunter/Tannersville). Oh yeah, they have a free ranging horse that wonders around the region. So be careful when you drive in. Sometimes he is in the middle of the road. Thumbs up to this place.

I would recommend the Cold Spring Lodge www.coldspringlodge.com . they have cabins with a fireplace, refridgerator, microwave, stove and a beautiful mountainview. they have firepits out back too. A really nice place for hikers. Clean and quiet.
